Origin
This breed originated in Cornwall, England, in the 1950s, when a curly-coated kitten named Kallibunker was discovered in a litter of domestic cats. This kitten's unique coat resulted from a natural genetic mutation, leading to the development of the Cornish Rex breed. Unlike other cats, these felines lack a typical outer coat, giving them their signature soft, wavy fur.
Characteristics
- Fine, curly coat that is short, soft, and velvety to the touch
- Slim, long-legged body with a naturally athletic and graceful build
- Large, high-set ears that enhance their alert and curious look
- Oval-shaped eyes that give them an expressive, intelligent gaze
- Weight typically ranges from 6-10 pounds, with a slender but muscular frame
- High metabolism, so they require more food than most breeds but remain lean
Lifespan
Your playful Cornish Rex can be part of the family for a good 12 to 16 years, sometimes even reaching 20 with attentive care! These sleek cats are generally hardy. To ensure a long, happy life, provide regular vet visits, a high-quality diet for their energy levels, keep them safely indoors (especially from strong sun or cold!), and give them lots of love.
Allergy Factors
Hypoallergenic = Lower Fel d 1 levels; reduced allergic reactions
Good for Allergy Sufferers (Lower Allergen Potential)
Cornish Rex cats have a unique coat made of soft down hair, with no outer layers, resulting in minimal shedding and lower Fel d 1 spread. While not fully hypoallergenic, many allergy sufferers tolerate them better. These cats are energetic, affectionate, and social. They need regular baths to manage skin oil buildup, which also helps reduce Fel d 1
Living Environment
Because of their high energy and love for play, they thrive in environments with plenty of climbing spaces, interactive toys, and human companionship. They also have a tendency to seek out warmth and will often snuggle under blankets, sit near heaters, or curl up in their owner's lap for extra coziness.
Enriched environment
- Provide heated bedding for warmth
- Rotate climbing structures often
- Encourage active play with tunnels
Social Habits
With Family
These cats form deep bonds with their owners and love being part of family activities. They will follow their humans around the house, always eager for attention and affection. Their playful and affectionate nature makes them an excellent choice for families, singles, and seniors alike.
With other Pets
Highly social and adaptable, these cats get along well with other cats, dogs, and even smaller pets. Their playful nature makes them great companions for other energetic animals, and they thrive in multi-pet households where they have company when their owners are away.
