Origin

This breed originated in Devon, England, in the 1950s when a curly-coated kitten was discovered in a litter of feral cats. Unlike the Cornish Rex, which has a similar coat, the Devon Rex has a unique gene responsible for its soft, wavy fur. The breed quickly gained popularity due to its unusual appearance and affectionate personality.

  • Highly active and loves to climb, often found perching on high furniture or shoulders

Lifespan

A Devon Rex friend often enjoys a lifespan of 12 to 16 years, and with great care, some reach 20! These charming cats are usually quite healthy. To help them live their best life, ensure regular vet visits, provide a nutritious diet, handle their delicate coats gently, and create a warm, safe indoor haven for them.

Health considerations

  • Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM): A common heart condition
  • Patellar Luxation: Dislocating kneecap condition
  • Skin Conditions: Prone to yeast/grease issues
  • Devon Rex Myopathy: Inherited muscle weakness disorder

Allergy Factors

Good for Allergy Sufferers (Lower Allergen Potential)

Similar to the Cornish Rex, the Devon Rex has a short, curly, fine coat that sheds very little. This, along with reportedly lower Fel d 1 production, makes them a popular choice for allergy sufferers. Their coat helps reduce the spread of allergen-laden fur. These are affectionate, energetic, and love to be close to their owners. Grooming is easy, though occasional baths help manage skin oils and reduce Fel d 1.

Living Environment

A home filled with interactive toys, climbing structures, and companionship suits this breed best. These cats thrive in environments where they receive plenty of attention and engagement. Because of their love for warmth, they often seek out cozy spots, heated beds, or even burrow under blankets.

Enriched environment

  • Use vertical spaces for climbing
  • Add interactive treat puzzles
  • Set up cozy sunbathing spots

Social Habits

With Family

Devon Rex cats form strong bonds with their owners and often act more like dogs in their desire for attention. They love being held, carried, and cuddled, often choosing to nap on laps or shoulders. Their affectionate nature makes them ideal for families and individuals who want a constant companion.

With other Pets

Highly sociable, these cats get along well with other pets, including cats and friendly dogs. They enjoy having a playmate and are best suited for multi-pet households where they won’t be left alone for too long. Their energetic and playful demeanor makes them a great match for other active animals.
