Origin

The Somali cat is essentially the long-haired version of the Abyssinian, with its origins tracing back to Abyssinians that carried a recessive longhair gene. In the 1960s and 1970s, breeders began selectively developing the breed, leading to the Somali’s official recognition. Despite its name, the breed has no direct connection to Somalia—it was named after the country because of its geographical proximity to Ethiopia, where Abyssinians originated.
